After back-to-back wins, Movistar Team will attempt to win its third straight stage on Wednesday as the Giro d'Italia continues with Stage 17. Stage 17 could be a day for the sprinters, at least initially. The first 190 kilometers of the stage are mostly flat before a climb near the end of the 214-kilometer stage. With the climb at the end, some separation may occur in the peloton.
That said, the climb isn't significant enough to cause major separation, which could lead to an exciting finish. In the Stage 17 preview from Cycling News, analysts expect riders to go full gas from the bottom of the final climb. If that happens, the stage could very well end up in a bunch finish. Cycling News also has a stage profile and a map of the stage which begins in Caravaggio and ends in Vicenza. via Cycling News. Vincenzo Nibali of Astana Pro Team continues to lead the general classification. He finished in the lead pack in Stage 16 and holds a 1:26 advantage over Cadel Evans of BMC Racing Team. Nibali will attempt to retain the lead with an individual time trail looming on Thursday in Stage 18. Stage 18 is scheduled to begin at 6:15 a.m. ET. Television coverage will be available in the United States...(Read Full Article)

Tony Allen draws a clutch, questionable flagrant foul

Tony Allen made a huge contribution to Memphis' massive comeback in San Antonio by drawing a hard foul from Manu Ginobili and apparently hitting his head hard enough to scare everyone:
On second look, though, Ginobili's foul could have been common and Allen's head-clutching cries of pain may have been exaggerated. If you watch closely, you'll see his head never actually strikes the floor. It was a hard fall, but it still didn't appear to match Allen's reaction. (The momentary pause is a little weird, too.) The flagrant held up after
review, though, and Allen made both free throws to help Memphis come back and eventually tie the game and send it to overtime. Very sneaky....(Read Full Article)

Kings vs. Sharks Game 4 update: Couture extends San Jose lead

The San Jose Sharks extended their lead to 2-0 over the Los Angeles Kings in the second period of Game 4, continuing their bid to tie the series before it heads back to southern California. The period began with more wonderful flying bodies, as Kings captain Dustin Brown had this inadvertent collision with Sharks hero Logan Couture.
Couture was an injury concern after getting banged up in Game 3, but he was in the Game 4 lineup and took a regular shift. In fact, even after this collision, he deflected Dan Boyle's
shot in for the Sharks' second goal. It was Couture's fifth goal of the playoffs.
The Kings were victimized by a quick whistle when a shot squeaked through Antti Niemi and was loose in the crease. But play was called dead just a fraction of a second before Dustin Penner pounced on the rebound.
This is the playoffs though, so fan-irritating breaks flow both ways. Midway through the period the Kings got their first power play when T.J. Galiardi was called for interference despite being taken into the goal crease by Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. The Kings failed to score on that power play, however, and the Sharks needed no quick whistle to dodge a goal. The Kings misfired on both of their power plays. After the Sharks outshot the Kings 15-3 in the first period, shots in the second period were even...(Read Full Article)

Jerryd Bayless' tough three-pointer from the wing fell woefully off line as the San Antonio Spurs staved off a furious comeback attempt by the Memphis Grizzlies and prevailed on Tuesday night, 93-89, to take a commanding 2-0 series lead in the Western Conference Finals. For more on Grizzlies, check out Grizzly Bear Blues | Spurs fans should head over to Pounding the Rock Missing 1-of-2 free throws was the only thing Tony Parker did wrong all night long, as it gave Memphis life in the waning seconds of overtime, but
San Antonio made key stops and found a way to win. After making a key block on Marc Gasol on the defensive end in overtime, Tim Duncan hit a jumper in the lane that hit every part of the rim and backboard before falling in to give the Spurs a four-point lead with 1:08 remaining. On the next sequence, the Grizzlies grabbed three offensive rebounds before Bayless hit a jumper at the top of the key to cut the lead to two with 16.9 seconds remaining in the extra frame. That was nothing compared to the drama to end regulation, however. A controversial play involving Tony Allen and Manu Ginobili allowed the Memphis Grizzlies to complete an improbable comeback and take things into overtime. Ginobili committed a questionably-called flagrant foul on Allen, who brought the game to within two after converting two free-throw attempts. Memphis then got the ball...(Read Full Article)

Kings vs. Sharks Game 4 recap: San Jose jumps L.A. early, hangs on late to tie series

The San Jose Sharks used a relentless early push and survived a late Los Angeles Kings response to win Game 4 by a 2-1 score and tie their Western Conference Semifinal series at 2-2. The Sharks stormed out of the gates, outshooting the Kings 15-3 in the first period. All that effort and two first-period power plays yielded only one goal, however, on a goal from converted defenseman Brent Burns.
The second period was much closer, with the teams logging six shots each and the Kings starting to tilt the ice back by the
end of the middle frame. Still, the only second-period goal came from Logan Couture, who deflected in Dan Boyle's point shot to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission. The Kings caught a tough break, however. It would have been 2-1 if the officials hadn't blown the whistle just a fraction of a second before Dustin Penner knocked this rebound in behind Antti Niemi.
The Kings continued their pushback in the third period, outshooting the Sharks 14-2. But they only managed one goal, a persistent effort on the power play by Mike Richards.
Typical of a playoff series that is suddenly much tighter than it looked four days ago, the game featured lots of collisions, some intended and some not. Early in the second, Dustin Brown and Couture had this inadvertent collision away from the puck.

Kings vs. Sharks Game 4 update: Brent Burns scores as San Jose dominates first period

The Brent Burns forward experiment continued to produce good results for the San Jose Sharks in Game 4. They led the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Burns, who has spent most of his NHL career as a defenseman. His conversion back to forward this season by coach Todd McLellan produced nine goals and 20 points in 30 regular season games. Tonight Burns scored his second goal of the playoffs.
Needing a win to tie the series, the Sharks came out firing, outshooting the Kings 14-3 in the
period. NBC Sports announcer Joe Micheletti called it the most dominant period he has ever seen Joe Thornton play. Thonrton won six of his seven faceoffs and assisted on the Burns goal. However, the Sharks only had a one-goal lead to show for their efforts. They came up short on two power play opportunities, a failure that could come back to haunt them. Tommy Wingels came inches from making it 2-0 when he hit the crossbar on the power play with under three minutes left. Logan Couture, a rumored injury concern before the game, took a regular shift in the period. When Zach Randolph and Matt Bonner compete for a jump ball, gravity wins.
(Honestly, though, that's just poor timing on a badly thrown toss. It's tough for all parties involved.)
