Mikhail Grabovski: Second-Line Centre for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

They say in order to determine a person’s future the best indicator is their past. For Mikhail Grabovski, his past is spotty at best, which begs the question, does he deserve a shot at the Toronto Maple Leafs' second line centre job? Through 137 career games as a Maple Leaf, “Grabo” has accumulated a total of 30 goals and 83 points. Along the way, Grabo has demonstrated an ability to create offense and a nose for the net. Unfortunately, Grabo has also demonstrated a number of bad characteristics, including mediocre play in the defensive zone, a penchant for taking bad penalties, and a compete level that often comes in spurts. With youngsters such as Nazem Kadri nipping at Grabovski’s heals for the No. 2 centre job, it is
tough to say whether Grabovski will emerge as the No. 2 pivot. With 164 career NHL games under his belt, Grabovski brings some much experience to the Leafs' lineup down the middle. With sophomore Tyler Bozak (37 career NHL games) and Kadri (one career NHL game), there is little doubt that Grabovski’s experience will be a factor when determining the Leafs' No. 2 pivot. Also in Grabo’s favor are his faceoff abilities. While not an excellent faceoff man, Grabovski won 366 and lost 369 faceoffs last season, for a winning percentage of 49.8 percent. On a team that struggled mightily on faceoffs last season, Grabovski’s ability on the faceoff (however mediocre), will be welcomed by head coach Ron Wilson with open arms. The additions of Colby Armstrong,...(Read Full Article)

NHL Puts End to Long-Term Contract Solution Still Not Enough

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - NHL >>
The NHL and NHLPA have hammered out an interesting deal. In exchange for Ilya Kovalchuk's contract, along with all previous contracts such as Marian Hossa's being accepted the NHLPA has agreed to amend the CBA.

The new rules state that if a player is older than 40 years old when a long-term (five years or longer) contract expires, the player's average salary until he is 40 is the cap hit until he is 40. After that, the salary he gets every year is the cap hit.

The second thing they said is that before the player turns 40 if he gets paid less than a million dollars in any year in a long term contract it will count as one million dollars. However, this will
not apply retroactively to any current contracts such as Kovalchuk, Henrik Zetterberg, or anyone else signed long term. So what is the problem I have? The main problem for me is that it does not count retroactively. I understand this is a concession given by the NHL as part of the negotiations, but that does not mean it is fair. If these deals must end, they have to apply it to everyone the same way, regardless of when they signed their contract. Now this opens up a floodgate when the next CBA is negotiated. Since the precedent has been set that you can waive rules for players if they signed a contract before a certain date, the new CBA can have a clause where teams that signed...(Read Full Article)

Luke Schenn: Still the Future of the Toronto Maple Leafs Defense

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - NHL >>
Luke Schenn, the future of the Toronto Maple Leafs' defense, had a few very important words for Nazem Kadri."There's lot of expectations," Schenn told Mike Ulmer of mapleleafs.nhl.com, "but the minute you start listening to everyone outside the rink, people tell you how good you are and you forget what got you here."In other words, Kadri don't get too caught up in the hype. Two seasons ago, Luke Schenn was the young stud defenceman for the Leafs. Often one of the few brights spots on the team, Schenn provided Leafs Nation hope for the future.A season removed from his rookie year, and Schenn is the new whipping boy of Leafs Nation. After a slow start to the season, Schenn was scratched for three games.
Schenn's play continued on inconsistently for a few months until—what will soon be known as the renaissance, Brian Burke made two blockbuster moves.January 31 of 2010, Brian Burke traded Ian White, Jamal Mayers, Matt Stajan, Nik Hagman to the Calgary Flames and Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake to the Anaheim Ducks. The Leafs received their new captain, Dion Phaneuf, a great penalty killer in Fredrick Sjostrom, and monster defensive prospect Keith Aulie from the Flames, and Conn Smythe Winner Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the Ducks. From this date on, Schenn's play improved under a new blueline presence, Phaneuf. Schenn finished strong enough to improve in goals going from two goals the previous season to five last season. Schenn finished with three more points and...(Read Full Article)

Baby Penguins Banter: September 4, 2010 Edition

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - NHL >>
Welcome to the first edition of Baby Penguins Banter for the month of September! The American Hockey League rolled out their regular season schedule last week. This edition will be devoted to looking at some of the most notable games on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2010-2011 season schedule. Mark your calendar to follow the Baby Penguins on these dates:   October 9, 2010: Penguins vs. Hershey Bears Saturday, October 9 marks the Penguins home opener against the Hershey Bears. The Bears are the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals and are the defending two-time Calder Cup champions. The Penguins have put up some remarkable efforts against Hershey in the regular season (they even won a game 5-0 this past February) but have struggled against them in the playoffs. Both
teams already have a drastically different look from last season. Last year, the Penguins were mostly made up of players with limited professional experience. Now, those players are another year older and wiser and know a little more about what Hershey brings to the table. Hershey, who has been dominant for the last two AHL seasons, was depleted over the summer. The Bears’ most significant loss was offensive powerhouse Alexandre Giroux, who signed with the Edmonton Oilers organization. They also lost Kyle Wilson (to Columbus), Chris Bourque (to Europe), and Greg Amadio (to Detroit). The Penguins will need to win this game to leave a good impression on their fanbase, who were largely dissatisfied with the 2009-2010 season. They will also have to show the Bears...(Read Full Article)

New York Rangers Alternate Jersey Information Revealed

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - NHL >>
According to SNY Rangers Blog and icethetics.info, the New York Rangers' new alternate jersey design has been revealed. Here is the leak coming straight from icethetics: "Icethetics has discovered that the Rangers will wear a navy blue third jersey, with NEW YORK emblazoned in red, diagonal text down the front. However, it's not the typeface we're used to seeing on the Rangers. It's more of a "retro" font, if you will—straight (not italic) with a vintage white stroke on the letters. In addition, there is a thick red stripe that wraps around the sleeves and bottom of the jersey, bordered in thinner vintage white stripes. The collar is vintage white with vintage white laces and the little Reebok triangle is red." Sounds like it will look very nice,
and it will fit into the Rangers' 85th Anniversary. The complete jersey will be revealed in mid-November.Read more NHL news on BleacherReport.com...(Read Full Article)

Texas Tech Opens Season Against SMU

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Texas Tech Football >>
The Texas Tech Red Raiders will open the 2010 season at home against the SMU Mustangs on Sunday, as college football continues through Labor Day Weekend with the NFL not starting till next week. The last time these two teams met was in 2008, when the Red Raiders beat up on the Mustangs 43-7. Texas Tech finished the 2009 season 9-4, including a nice win over Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl. The Red Raiders will have a much different look to them this season, as they bring in Tommy Tuberville to take over for Mike Leach, who was let go at the end of last season due to player misconduct. Texas Tech does have 14 starters back this season, but figure to be slow out
of the gates having to learn new systems on both sides of the ball. The Mustangs also ended the 2009 season on a good note, as they beat Nevada 45-10 in the Hawaii Bowl to push their overall record to 8-5. The Mustangs have 15 starters back, and will look to compete with Houston for the top spot in the Conference USA West. If you are interested in doing some college football betting on the game this Sunday, Sports Interaction has the Red Raiders 13.5 point favorites over the Mustangs with the total currently sitting at 60.5 points. It is hard telling just what the Red Raiders offense will look like without Leach running the show, but there is no question that they still have the talent to...(Read Full Article)

Big 12 Community Picks

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) SB Nation - Texas Tech Red Raiders >>
Week one of the RCT Community picks are finalized and we ended up getting 31 votes total.  Not too bad for week 1 and hopefully as the season goes along those numbers will pick up each week.  I'm going to keep the results here short and sweet, especially this week because there is a pretty clear favorite in all but two games.  Throughout the season  I will keep track of the community's record so we can brag about our expertise at the end of the season.   The games will be broken down into three categories.  Category one will be the locks and I'll put any team that gets 85% of more of the vote into this group.  Category two will be the "pretty confident" group
and this category will be games that have any from 60% to 84% of the vote for one team.  The third category will be the "toss up" group, these games will have the votes split from 40% to 59% for one team.  Time for the results after the jump! Locks Kansas over North Dakota State:  The Jayhawks ran away with the vote and pitched a shutout.  Impressive work for the Jayhawks.   Iowa State over Northern Illinois: 97% for Iowa State, good call on this one. Missouri over Illinois: 87% for the Tigers in this one today.  Higher than I expected considering it requires us to vote for Missouri but it's the correct pick.  Way to swallow your pride men. Texas over Rice: 100% for Texas.  Yawn. Nebraska over...(Read Full Article)
