Yankees Win Their 8th in Row

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
The Yankees have won their 8th game in a row, overcoming a poor performance from Javier Vazquez, who was pulled in the 5th inning, to beat the Blue Jays 7-5. Here is a quick recap: Vazquez did not look as sharp as he had in his two previous bullpen appearances, only managing to hit 89 mph on the gun. Marcus Thames started in right field, for the first time in a long time, in place of Nick Swisher, who was a pregame scratch. Thames came through with the game winning home run in the 7th inning.
Brett Gardner stole his 40th base of the season. Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, Kerry Wood, and Mariano Rivera all pitched great coming out of the bullpen. Toronto’s Jose Bautista was ejected in the 7th inning after arguing balls and strikes. Robinson Cano‘s bat woke up a little, he had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. If you are impatient, or a Javy-hater, this was a tough game to watch, but the Yankees battled back after an early deficit, got a clutch hit from Thames, and the bullpen shut the door. Let The Good Times Roll: Yankees Win Eighth Straight, Hottest Team In The Majors

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
The Yankees won their eighth consecutive game today against the Toronto Blue Jays, and are the hottest team in baseball as the stretch run begins. Javy Vazquez was less than stellar in his return to the starting rotation today, giving up five runs in four and two thirds innings pitched, the Blue Jays also slugged two home runs. The bullpen came in and bridged the gap to Mariano Rivera, and as usual, the sandman finished it off. Mo also lowered his ERA to 1.06, which would be a career low if it holds up through the end of the season, pretty amazing
for a 40 year old pitcher. The Yankees offense continued their hot hitting, driving in seven runs on the strength of nine hits. Robinson Cano and Francisco Cervelli each had multi-hit games, and Brett Gardner was on base three times hitting out of the lead-off spot. But it was Marcus Thames who delivered the big blow in the seventh inning, a two run shot to left-center field, breaking a 5-5 tie and putting the Yanks on top 7-5. With the win the Yanks move to 86-50 on the season, which is their high water mark for the year, and their eight game winning streak is the longest this year as well. The win is also significant because the Red Sox lost the first game of a double header with the White Sox today,...(Read Full Article)

Florida Football: What I Learned From Gators vs. Miami (Ohio) Game

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
After watching the University of Florida secure their home field advantage and squeak out a victory against the University of Miami (Ohio), there were some positives and negatives coming out from each sideline. Continuing this regular segment, I go through the standout players, those that need work, and tendencies of each team that must be praised or fixed.   The John Brantley Hype is Well-Merited   Numerous media outlets were buying into the hype that Florida junior quarterback John Brantley was a great replacement for Tim Tebow and had enough talent to lead Florida back to a BCS bowl. Tebow is arguably one of the
greatest college football players in history, so it’s hard to compare the two. But Brantley showed great poise in the pocket, along with a great ability to throw an accurate pass and hit his receivers between the numbers. Though the play calls did not seem to go in his favor, when Brantley was allowed to throw deep, he succeeded (though the receivers did not always do the same). Look for Brantley to continue to work on his game and improve en route to an 11-win season.   Miami’s Defense Could Lead the MAC – and challenge the BCS teams at the top of the nation   In the first half, Miami allowed Florida just 14 net yards. Fourteen net yards, to one of the greatest offensive teams in the...(Read Full Article)

Kevin Durant vs. The World: Round-by-Round Look at Team USA's Shot at Gold

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
To say that Kevin Durant and Team USA were inconsistent during pool play at the FIBA World Championships would be something of an understatement.Sure, the spotless record (five wins, no losses) and substantial average margin of victory (25 points per game in favor of the US) looks nice. But, as tends to be the case in the game of basketball, statistics don't tell the whole story. In just about every game, the Yanks have lollygagged through the first two or three quarters before finally combining effort with superior collective talent to put away substandard competition.Case in point: Tunisia, regarded as the
worst team in the competition (they lost to Iran), was within four points of Team USA part way through the third quarter.  It took America's bench, led by the explosive Eric Gordon and the hustling Kevin Love, to widen the gap and put away its North African antagonists.Coach K's crew employed the same tactic against a well-oiled and NBA-talented Brazil squad and nearly ceded victory on end-game free throws. And while the Red, White, and Blue has managed to keep its perfect record intact despite turnovers and inconsistent effort, advancing through the knock-out stages of the competition will take a lot more than overwhelming athletic ability and a top-notch pedigree.Make no mistake about it: the US has an excellent chance–as good as any other team–to add...(Read Full Article)

NFL Cuts: Cardinals Release Matt Leinart, Is Derek Anderson The Solution?

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
According to both ESPN and nfl.com, the Cardinals have released former first-round pick quarterback Matt Leinart. Leinart, a former Heisman Trophy- and national championship-winning quarterback at USC, was expected to be a superstar in an offense that had receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. However, Leinart has played poorly in the time he was given as a starter for the Cardinals, making just 17 starts with a 7-10 record and a below average 70.3 quarterback rating. Leinart was eventually benched in favor of veteran Kurt Warner, who led the Cardinals to their first-ever
Super Bowl and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2008. With the retirement of Warner this past offseason, Leinart was given another chance in offseason activities and the preseason to prove that he was worthy of the starting quarterback job. After an unimpressive preseason, the Cardinals have released Leinart, leaving Derek Anderson as the likely starter. Derek Anderson has had an interesting career. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2005 draft but was placed on waivers early in the 2005 regular season. The Cleveland Browns claimed him off of waivers to be a backup quarterback shortly afterward. Poor play by starters Charlie Frye and Trent Dilfer prompted the Browns to draft college star Brady Quinn. ...(Read Full Article)

Florida Football: Ejections, Penalties, Interceptions.... Your Welcome Gators

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
It’s really hard to say if there was one play that really lost Miami this game. Notice I said Miami lost the game. The Gators surely did not beat Miami (Oh.) today in the Swamp. They were given the game as Miami came close on many drives, but so far away, only being able to score on 4 field goals, despite having the ball for 34:44, keeping the Florida offense on the field. After the 1st quarter, Miami was up 3-0 on a Trevor Cook field goal. Florida responded quickly though, getting a gift from Miami quarterback Zac Dysert after Janoris
Jenkins takes the interception back 70 yards. After the pick six, Miami went 3 and out. Florida had the momentum after the interception and the failed fake punt by Miami that gave the Gators the football at the Miami 21. The Gators looked to be taking charge after they get (yet another) interception and score on a 2 play, 2 yard drive. 21-6 is what the halftime score was. But anybody who watched the game can’t deny that it looked like a tie. Dysert had 3 interceptions in the first half, which is absurd. But those interceptions were just part of the first half miscues. A Miami defensive player got ejected as well, and the Miami offense put up nice drives, but could never score a...(Read Full Article)

2010 NFL Season: What Pete Carroll and The Sehawks Knew and The Jets Didn't

E-mail

( 0 Votes ) Bleacher Report - Front Page >>
It was the 3rd day of the draft, the Seahawks had the 11th pick in the 4th round. They were in need of a running back and everybody thought they knew who the Seahawks were picking. Joe Mcknight. Joe Mcknight played for Seahawks coach at USC and was expected to go higher in the draft. Almost Everybody thought with his own guy on the board, and their void at running back, they Seahawks would take him. Instead they went in a different direction and drafted Walter Thurmond, a corner back out of Oregon. The Jets eventually traded up the next pick to
get Mcknight. Many people were curious as to why Pete Carroll would pass on his own guy. Someone who was probably paid to go to USC. But the answer became clear. While Jets personnel were slapping fives because they thought they just got a steal. Pete Carroll knew something, something the Jets unfortunetly didn't know. That Mcknight was in no way ready to be an NFL player. The Jets found this out the hard way. During the preseason Mcknight constantly fumbled the ball fumbling three times in four games. He was not a physical runner, and stopped running when contact was made. He also has lacked focus. Even Rex Ryan said he was playing "Horrible" in a press conference after their last preseason game against the Eagles. Mcknight will make the team by...(Read Full Article)
