Los Angeles and San Jose played another scoreless third period, but the final few seconds of the frame has set Game 3 up for a wild overtime finish. The Kings and Sharks are tied up at 1-1. The third period of Game 3 played out about the same as the previous two periods. Slowly but surely this series is beginning to look a lot like the Kings-Blues series in the first round: superb defending and goaltending resulting in a low-scoring hockey game. Los Angeles had their best offensive period of the game in the final frame, testing Antti Niemi multiple timess with good scoring chances. Slava Voynov nearly got a fluttering shot through Niemi from distance midway through the
period, but the Sharks quickly ejected the rebound. San Jose is outshooting Los Angeles 38-27, and the 1-1 score is a testament to the brilliant netminding at both ends. The final few minutes of the third might cost L.A. Robyn Regehr was called for hooking at 19:18, and Trevor Lewis was called for goaltender interference on this shorthanded chance with five seconds left in regulation. San Jose will have 1:19 of 5-on-3 to work with in overtime. If there was any doubt about Danica Patrick's popularity it was reconfirmed Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway when she won the fan vote to gain entry into the Sprint All-Star Race. The first woman to win a pole in NASCAR's top series, Patrick is in her rookie year in Sprint Cup and was expected to receive the most votes. She was one of three finalists along with Bobby Labonte and Martin Truex Jr. "First and very foremost, thank you to all the fans who voted for me or maybe voted so many times for me," Patrick said. "I'm very fortunate to have the fan base that I do, and I never forget that. "I'm going to sound really cheesy right now. I'm going to race
for the fans tonight because I really, really ‑‑ I got done with that race and honestly I feel really fired up." Patrick finished the preliminary Sprint Showdown in ninth and on the lead lap. There was some debate earlier in the week when NASCAR announced a driver did not have to finish on the lead lap to be eligible to receive the fan vote that the decision was made to favor Patrick, who was likely to win but has finished on the lead lap just twice this season. Some dubbed the modification "The Danica Rule." Patrick had hoped to race her way into the All-Star Race, but when it became obvious she wasn't going to finish in the top two transfer positions --Jamie McMurray and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished first and second -- she decided to back off and save her car in hopes she would claim the fan vote. Don't look now, but the San Jose Sharks are dropping like flies. Seconds after Scott Hannan left for the dressing room, Martin Havlat was also nowhere to be seen on the bench. The Sharks then updated the media on his status: Official word from #sjsharks: Havlat "under evaluation, return questionable" — Brodie Brazil (@brodiebrazilCSN) May 18, 2013 Keep in mind that Havlat returned tonight from a five-game absence due to injury. The Sharks are also missing Logan Couture after this hit from Jeff Carter.
His return doesn't seem likely either: Advised by #SJSharks that Couture is also "under evaluation" and return is questionable. Uh-oh time. — David Pollack (@PollackOnSharks) May 18, 2013 More in the NHL: Follow

San Jose withstood a myriad of injuries in the second, as the Sharks and Kings head into the third period tied at 1-1. The Sharks quickly went down a man when Scott Hannan left for the dressing room with an undisclosed injury. Just a few moments later, Martin Havlat left as well. And then Jeff Carter laid this hit on Logan Couture that temporarily knocked him out of the game. Through all of that, San Jose was able to apply pressure on Jonathan Quick and the Kings. The Sharks outshot Los Angeles 14-7 in the second and killed off two roughing minors as well. Quick has been outstanding thus far, stopping 27 of 28

NBA Playoffs 2013: Knicks vs, Pacers Game 6: Indiana holds off late rally, wins 106-99

Defense has been the Indiana Pacers' calling card all season long. It disappeared for stretches in Game 6, but it reemerged at a key point in the fourth quarter to help push the Pacers past the Knicks, 106-99, to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. Down 89-88 midway through the fourth quarter, Roy Hibbert kept the Knicks from going up four by blocking a Carmelo Anthony dunk attempt literally right at the rim. Two plays later, Stephenson picked off an Anthony pass and converted a three-point play to put the Pacers up 95-92. Stephenson, who finished the game with a career-high 25 points, stayed aggressive the next play down, driving on Tyson Chandler and causing him
to pick up his sixth foul as the Pacers took a five-point lead and never looked back. Indiana looked ready to put the game on ice midway through the third quarter when the rest of the Knicks finally gave Carmelo Anthony some help. Down 10, the Knicks went on a quick 12-2 run to tie the game in typical Knick fashion. Iman Shumpert sank three consecutive three-pointers before J.R. Smith added one of his own. Shumpert finished the third with 16 of his 19 points to help the Knicks tie the game at 81 heading in to the fourth quarter. The Pacers initially took control of the game in the second quarter thanks to balanced scoring from their starting five and utter domination on the glass. The Pacers out-rebounded the Knicks 25-15 in the first half. Stephenson was key in the first...(Read Full Article)

Ken Mauer, what are you doing? Nobody was paying attention during this jump ball at all. Why did he decide to throw it while nobody was looking? Weird.

NBA Playoffs 2013: Knicks vs. Pacers Game 6: Hill returns, Pacers up 55-47 at halftime

George Hill's return helped ignite the Indiana Pacers offense as they have taken a 55-47 lead in to halftime. Hill, who was cleared to play just hours before tip-off after clearing the NBA's concussion test, started for Indiana as they jumped out to a 29-27 lead at the end of a surprisingly fast paced first quarter. Carmelo Anthony's 12 points kept the Knicks in the ball game as he and Paul George, his primary defender, both played all 12 minutes in the quarter. The unusually high scoring continued in the second quarter, but the Pacers were able to extend their lead thanks to the combination of their continued dominance inside and the jump shots for any Knick not named
Carmelo Anthony stopped falling. Before the game, Drew Garrison listed three story lines that would help determine Game 6. Here's where we stand so far. Will the Pacers cut down their turnovers? They did for most of the first quarter, but then the reserves came in and they started piling up a bit. Overall though, the return of Hill did a lot to cut down the turnovers, as the Pacers have eight. Not ideal, but not on pace for the 19 they had in Game 5. Hill even led Indiana on a couple of fast breaks, something that's been a rare sight in this series. Can Chris Copeland stretch the floor for the Knicks again? Not really, but it wasn't his fault in the first half either. Mike Woodson seemed hesitant to go small until midway through the second quarter, which limited Copeland's effectiveness. It's unclear...(Read Full Article)

This is an excellent example how not to play defense on a guy who is 7-foot-2. Great work, Kenyon Martin.
